November is National Native American Heritage Month—a time to celebrate the vibrant traditions, languages, and stories of Native American communities. As we honor these rich histories, Noble County, Indiana, offers a special reminder of our shared heritage.
Just a quarter mile south of West 200 North, near U.S. 33, stands a marker dedicated to Chief Papakeecha’s House. Erected in 1967 by the Noble County Historical Society, this site commemorates a home built in 1827 on a 36-section reservation for $562.
Chief Papakeecha, known as Flat Belly, led the Miami people from 1820 until he died in 1837, just before their removal from the area. Although the original house was lost to a "great wind," this historical marker preserves the legacy of Chief Papakeecha and the Miami people’s enduring spirit.
As we celebrate National Native American Heritage Month, let’s remember and honor the rich contributions of Native American communities, past and present.
